Why are hygiene appointments important?

One of the most important visits to Desborough Dental is your appointment to see the hygienist. Without proper maintenance, even the best teeth will not last. Your gums form the foundation of your teeth, and if the foundations aren’t strong, neither are the teeth. Our hygienists are here to ensure that your teeth and gums are well looked after, by us, and by you.

The hygienist is a dental professional that primarily focuses on the health of your gums. Gingivitis and periodontal disease are both conditions which can lead to bleeding, swollen gums, bad breath, and ultimately tooth loss.

When you visit one of our hygienists, they will remove all hard and soft plaque that has built up. On top of this they will guide you on how to best prevent further build up, and how to look after your teeth and gums to ensure that your mouth stays healthy.

For those patients with established gum disease, treatment is more complex and usually requires a team approach, involving the hygienist, dentist and sometimes a periodontal specialist.

If you have had a history of gum disease (periodontitis) then it would be best to book in for a check with the dentist before seeing the hygienist to treatment plan your case.
